How to Offer Attar and Fragrance to Deities
Offering fragrance (gandha) is one of the most intimate and beautiful upacaras in deity worship. Here is a complete guide to properly offering attar according to Vaishnava tradition.

Gandha: The Fragrance Offering in Vedic Worship

In the Vedic tradition, offering fragrance (gandha) to the deity is one of the sixteen upacaras — items of worship — in the Sodasupacara puja system. The shastra prescribes that the Lord should be offered the finest fragrances available, treating Him with the highest standard of hospitality. Pure natural attars represent the pinnacle of botanical fragrance and are the most appropriate offering for this sacred purpose.

How to Apply Attar to Deities

Apply a single drop of attar to a clean, soft cotton swab or a small piece of clean cloth. With reverential care, gently dab the fragrance at the base of the deity's lotus feet, on the hands, or on the garland offered to the Lord. For ruh oils, even less is needed — touch the applicator to the bottle opening and use the residue. The fragrance should be delicate and inviting, not overpowering. Sandalwood-based attars like Rose Sandal or Mogra Sandal are particularly suitable as they are traditionally prescribed in puja texts.

Which Attars are Most Appropriate for Deity Worship?

Sandalwood is the foundational fragrance in Vaishnava worship — Mysore Sandalwood Attar or Australian Sandalwood are always appropriate offerings. Rose is beloved by Radharani and is traditionally offered to Radha-Krishna deities. Jasmine (mogra or juhi) is offered during morning darshan. Musk is mentioned in Vedic texts as a superior offering to Lord Vishnu. Frankincense and parijaat are also highly appropriate. Avoid synthetic fragrances, which are not considered pure offerings.

Adding Attar to Abhishek Water

A single drop of pure attar can be added to the water or panchamrita used for the deity's sacred bath (abhishek). Use sandalwood, rose, or jasmine attars for this purpose. The fragrant water becomes a transcendental offering that honors the Lord with the finest botanical fragrance. This is particularly beautiful during major festivals like Janmashtami, Rama Navami, and Gaura Purnima.
